Landscaping Goochland, VA
Landscaping for Goochland's rural lots, from entry plantings on long drives to beds framing a new home.
What We Do
Full-Service Landscaping & Hardscaping in Goochland, VA
Goochland is the outlier in our service area — its own county seat, its own historic courthouse square dating to 1826, and technically part of the Richmond metro area rather than Charlottesville. It's also the most rural community we serve, with large lots, working farms, and equestrian properties well outside the density of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
Landscaping at that scale means different equipment, different scheduling, and a real plan for the acreage involved — not a scaled-up version of a quarter-acre suburban yard. We scope Goochland projects around the property's actual size and use, whether that's a working farm, a large equestrian estate, or a rural homestead.

Local Know-How
Landscaping in Goochland, VA: What Local Properties Need
Goochland County sits east of Charlottesville in Virginia's Piedmont, between Albemarle and the Richmond area, with the James River forming its entire southern border. About 24,700 people lived here at the 2020 census, and more than nine in ten live in rural areas, in places like Goochland Courthouse, Centerville, Crozier and Manakin-Sabot. Route 250 follows the historic Three Chopt Trail through the county, and growth has picked up since the West Creek business park and Route 288 opened, so new homes on large wooded lots now sit alongside long-established farms.
Goochland's rural lots give us room for landscaping that suits the land: entry plantings at the end of a long drive, beds that frame a new home, and trees to screen outbuildings or neighbors. We choose plants for the Piedmont clay and full sun common on cleared lots, and we plan the layout so maintenance stays manageable on a big property.
How Goochland homeowners find us
Goochland owners often find us while searching for a crew willing to make the trip east, since many Charlottesville companies stop at the county line.
What Goochland owners ask first
On larger rural lots, the first question is coverage: whether we will handle the full acreage and the long drive, not just the yard closest to the house.
Why Goochland clients choose Green Thumb
We plan Goochland jobs as full-day visits, so the crew finishes the whole property in one trip instead of rushing to get back west.

Our Story
Meet Ryan Pace — Owner & Founder
Green Thumb Landscaping & Hardscaping is a locally owned, fully insured landscaping and hardscaping contractor based in Charlottesville, Virginia. Founded in 2018 by Ryan Pace, the business has served Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and the surrounding areas ever since.
From the time he could walk, Ryan loved working outside. He started cutting neighbors' lawns in Glenmore (Keswick, VA) at age 12, grew that into a degree in Turf Management and Horticulture from Virginia Tech, and opened Green Thumb in 2018. He's still in the field leading a crew — mowing, mulching, or building a patio — every week.

What landscaping services do you offer in Goochland?
Green Thumb offers full landscape design and installation, lawn mowing and maintenance, hardscaping (patios, walkways, retaining walls, fire pits), sod installation, drainage solutions, and seasonal services throughout Goochland County.
Is Goochland outside your normal Charlottesville service area?
Goochland is the furthest-east community we regularly serve, technically part of the Richmond metro area rather than Charlottesville — but it's a consistent part of our route, not an occasional exception.
Do you work on large rural and equestrian properties in Goochland?
Yes. Goochland County is Virginia's most rural community in our service area, with large-acreage rural and equestrian properties that need a different scope than a standard suburban yard, and we regularly scope mowing, drainage, and hardscape projects to that scale.
Are permits required for hardscaping projects in Goochland?
Larger hardscape projects like retaining walls may require a Goochland County permit, separate from Albemarle County's process. We handle the correct permit process for any Goochland project that requires one.

Goochland is on the eastern edge of our service area, on the way toward Richmond. We book Goochland work as full-day visits so the trip never shortchanges the job. Call 434-953-9777 to get on the schedule.
Do I need a permit for landscaping in Goochland, VA?
Planting beds and general landscaping don't need a permit in Goochland County. Walls, grading near property lines, or work in a drainage way may need a check with Goochland County's community development office, which we handle before work starts.
